Composhield: Redefining Ballistic and Blast Defense
Composhield

Since 1996, Composhield, a Danish company specializing in advanced ballistic and blast
protection technologies, has been at the forefront of innovation in the field.
BodyArmorNews.com had the pleasure to interview the Sales Manager, Mr. Philip Olrik,
to discuss the company’s history, advancements, and future aspirations.

From Research Lab to Market Leader

Founded in 1996, Composhield initially focused heavily on research and development
within structural protection, laying the groundwork for its future success. Over time, the
company shifted gears, emphasizing mobile protection for land, air, and naval systems in
the last decade.

The moment in which the new CEO took over the company marked a fresh start for
Composhield. He steered the company toward a more market-driven and customer-
centric approach. This strategic shift paid off in 2008 when Composhield secured a
significant contract to armor the Mercedes Benz Actros vehicle. This marked its entry
into vehicle protection and established its presence in the market for mobile protection
systems.

Collaborative Solutions for Every Need

Composhield prides itself on being a partner to its clients, engaging in close collaboration
to tailor solutions that meet specific needs, whether these are price-sensitive or
performance-driven. This customer-centric approach has solidified their reputation as a
trusted provider of advanced protective solutions. Composhield’s operations span
globally, with facilities in Denmark, Abu Dhabi, and strategic partnerships in Ohio, USA.
The new facility in Aarhus, Denmark, dedicated to advanced composite processing,
enhances the company’s capabilities and responsiveness on a global scale.

Versatile and Reliable: Composhield’s Comprehensive Protection

Spall Liner: Shielding from Within

Composhield’s Spall Liner is crafted from soft materials like aramid or glass fiber,
designed to shield vehicle crew compartments from spalling. These liners can be
installed in land, air, and naval systems, providing versatile protection.

Add-on Armor: Elevating Vehicle Defense

The Add-on Armor enhances the protection level of both existing and new vehicles.
These solutions are tailored to specific weight, price, and protection levels, ranging from
level one to six within Standard 4569. The level six solution is their core product,
offering lighter and more cost-effective protection than many alternatives on the market.

Structural Armor: Integrating Robust Defense

Their Structural Armor can be integrated into vehicle structures for enhanced protection,
using a combination of materials such as ceramics, fibers, resins, steel, and aluminum.

Customization: Precision Meets Performance

Composhield’s customization services result in protective solutions that meet specific
operational requirements while balancing price, performance, and mass. This approach
ensures that their products are perfectly suited to the needs of their clients.

Innovations in Protection: Tackling New Threats

Composhield continues to innovate, recently introducing an anti-drone net designed to
protect against kamikaze drones. This product evolved from their RPG net solution,
developed in collaboration with TNO, and showcases their ability to respond to emerging
threats.

Expanding into Personal Protection: Meeting Market Demand

While Composhield has traditionally focused on vehicle protection, they have recently
ventured into body armor due to high demand.

“It’s actually funny because we mostly do vehicle protection, but we have gotten so
many requests for personal protection that we feel forced to do it at the moment, to be
honest,” said Olrik.

When first getting into personal protection, they started producing standalone solutions
for civilian vehicles, body armor, and gunner’s protection kits, resulting in their NIJ Level
IV solution. This solution is lighter and more cost-effective than many on the market.
Their latest innovation is their Standard 4569 Level 2 Personal Protection.

The Road Ahead: Commitment to Innovation and Excellence

Composhield’s shift from a research-focused division to a market leader in ballistic and
blast protection is a testament to their commitment to innovation, quality, and customer
satisfaction. With a strong foundation, extensive product range, and continuous focus on
innovation, Composhield is well-positioned to lead the field in protective solutions for
years to come.
